Young Professionals Host Zoom Strike Against Rising Midrand Rent

MIDRAND - The Young Professionals Association of South Africa (YPASA) held its first Zoom protest against the rising cost of rent in Midrand this week.
Speaking exclusively to The Grapevine, the organisation, which represents young professionals across South Africa, said it had become increasingly concerned after members complained about the rising cost of accommodation in the Midrand area.“I’ve had to buy only one hubbly this month,” said Tebogo, a proud Discovery Bank user. “Every time they increase the rent, we suffer, and that’s not right.”
Several landlords told The Grapevine that they were simply responding to the rising cost of living in the country.“We are tired of these young professionals who have been young for 30 years and are still complaining,” one landlord said.
The Grapevine gained access to the Zoom meeting and was met with a flurry of reassuring nods, muted microphones and clapping reactions. The protest ended shortly afterwards, with attendees reportedly agreeing to “circle back” on the matter at a later date.
